FAQ

Questions patients ask

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No. You can call Halsey Chiropractic directly and book an appointment. Dr. Kyle Harders will take your history, examine you and explain what he finds before recommending a plan. If your problem needs imaging or a different kind of provider, he will tell you that rather than starting care that will not help.

Do you accept new patients?

Yes. New patients of every age are welcome, from infants and children to seniors. Call the office at 918-664-5180 and we will find a time that works for you and, if you like, for other members of your family.

What happens at my first appointment?

The first visit starts with a conversation about what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse and what your days demand of your body. Dr. Harders then checks your posture, range of motion and how each part of your spine moves. He explains his findings in plain language and walks you through a plan, including roughly how many visits it should take.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Adjustments are precise and controlled, and Dr. Harders works to make them as comfortable as possible. Most people feel pressure followed by relief. The popping sound some joints make is gas moving in the joint fluid, not bones cracking. If an area is too sore, he uses a gentler technique or works around it.

Will I be sore after an adjustment?

Some people feel mild soreness after their first few visits, similar to the ache after a new workout. It usually fades within a day or two. Drink water, move gently and skip hard exercise that evening. Call the office if the soreness is sharp, spreading or lasts longer than a couple of days.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on the problem and how long you have had it. A recent strain often improves in a few visits. Long-standing back pain, a disc problem or an injury from a wreck usually takes longer, with visits closer together at first and spreading out as you improve. Dr. Harders gives you his estimate after the exam.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, such as athletic wear or loose pants. Stiff jeans, heavy belts and restrictive clothing get in the way of the exam and treatment. If you are coming in for neck pain, leave large necklaces and earrings at home.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, cash and check, along with CareCredit, third-party payers and liability claims, and auto insurance. If you have a question about paying for your care, call the office before your first visit and we will talk it through with you.

Do you accept auto insurance after a car accident?

Yes. Care after a car accident is usually billed to auto insurance or to a third-party liability claim against the at-fault driver. Bring your claim number, the adjuster’s name and phone number, and a copy of the accident report if you have one.

Should I see a chiropractor after a wreck if I feel fine?

It is a good idea. Adrenaline at the scene masks pain, and stiffness from whiplash often sets in a day or more after the crash. An early exam can find injuries before they settle into long-term stiffness, and it documents your injury close to the date of the accident. See our auto injury page for more.

Is chiropractic care safe for children?

Adjustments for children are much gentler than those for adults. Dr. Harders adapts his technique to each child’s size and age, and for infants that means light fingertip pressure with no twisting or popping. A parent stays in the room. Chiropractic care works alongside your pediatrician and does not replace medical care for a sick child.

Can I see a chiropractor while pregnant?

Yes. Prenatal care is part of our family practice. Positioning and technique are adapted to your stage of pregnancy to keep you comfortable. Tell us how far along you are when you book, mention any pregnancy complications, and keep your obstetric provider informed about your chiropractic care.

What is spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment that uses a computerized table to apply gentle, intermittent traction to the spine. That creates negative pressure inside the discs, which can take pressure off irritated nerves and help nutrients reach the injured area. It is often used for herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease and sciatica.

Who should not have spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is not recommended if you are pregnant, or if you have a fracture, a tumor, an abdominal aortic aneurysm, advanced osteoporosis or metal implants in the spine. Tell us about any of these, and about any recent spinal surgery. A consultation with Dr. Harders always comes before treatment.

What conditions do you treat?

Dr. Harders regularly treats low back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, joint stiffness, hip pain and sports injuries, as well as whiplash and other injuries from car accidents. For disc-related pain he may recommend spinal decompression. If your condition needs a different kind of care, he will refer you on.

We are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 12pm and 1:30pm to 6pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 1pm. We are closed Saturday and Sunday. The early start and evening hours make it easier to fit a visit around work or school.

When should I go to the emergency room instead?

Seek emergency care right away for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, sudden weakness in an arm or leg, back pain with a fever, a sudden severe headache, confusion after a head injury, or pain after a serious fall or crash. Once serious injury is ruled out, chiropractic care can help with recovery.
